25 June 2009 Kids Meet Up for winter fun at Queensland Museum South BankKids Meet Up! will warm up the winter school holidays at Queensland Museum South Bank, Monday 29 June-Friday 10 July. Kids Meet Up! celebrates Queensland's distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through storytelling, activities, art, music and culture sharing. Acting Director of Queensland Museum South Bank Bernadette McCormack said the museum will provide a welcoming space for young people to learn about other cultures. "Kids Meet Up! is an engaging and interactive way to share cultures, learn through storytelling, and have fun doing new things," Ms McCormack said. "Visitors will share in Aunty Sarah Wapau's journey from the Torres Straight Islands to Brisbane through Stories and weaving from the Torres Strait and learn how she rediscovered a personal link to her culture through weaving. Children can learn how to create amazing creatures from the leaves of the coconut palm as they listen to her stories." The Kids Meet Up Activity Zone will be a hive of activity offering painting, music and many other hands-on activities. The ochre painting and artefact workshops showcase Aboriginal artist Rick Roser as he tells stories and gets 'hands-on' with ochre painting and artefacts. Didgeridoo and Dreamtime Stories with John Briggs will fill the museum with music and stories that stir the imagination of young and old. The Kids Meet Up! Activities will take place on Level 4 next to Dandiiri Maiwar, Queensland Museum's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures Centre, home to a collection of over 1000 ancient and modern artefacts from Queensland Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islanders. Here families can experience triumphs, tragedies, histories, hopes, dreams and achievements through stories from the Torres Strait Islands, Yarrabah, Aurukun, Cape York, Hope Vale, Townsville, Cairns, Lockhart River, Laura and Cherbourg. Kids Meet Up! runs from 10am to 3.30pm daily. All activities are free. For times and details go to www.southbank.qm.qld.gov.au.
