Created to celebrate Shanghai Week this exhibition acknowledges Queensland's long-running Sister State Agreement with Shanghai, the largest city of the People's Republic of China. It also illustrates the importance and responsibility of protecting shared wildlife.
An Enduring Link in the Sky
Brisbane and Shanghai are 'river cities' fronted by extensive marine wetlands of international significance for long-distance migratory shorebirds. These birds breed in Siberia, northern China and Alaska during the northern summer and spend their non-breeding season in Australasia during the southern summer.
Shanghai Bound is a tribute to the intrepid birds that pass through both cities as they travel incredible distances along the East Asia-Australasia Flyway.
Shanghai Bound also highlights international conservation agreements and scientific exchanges vital to the protection of these remarkable birds.
Shanghai Week
Wednesday 24 June - Tuesday 30 June 2009
Shanghai Week marks the lead-up to the much-awaited World Exposition 2010 that will be held in that city next year. In recent years Shanghai has experienced impressive economic, scientific and cultural development, and has shown itself to be a city with an emerging tourist industry. Today, Shanghai is the largest centre of commerce and finance in the People's Republic of China, and has been described as the 'showpiece' of the world's fastest-growing economy. Queensland Museum South Bank is proud to salute Queensland's Sister State, and congratulates it on its success.
