Re-discover the history, passion, drama and controversies of League! The hundred year anniversary of Rugby League in Australia is an ideal time to delve into the history of the game that has grown to become one of Australia's most popular sports. This travelling exhibition, from the National Museum of Australia, gives you a unique opportunity to remember and cherish some of the game's great teams and personalities from the past and present, and to see first-hand a host of treasures generally not available for public viewing. League was established as a breakaway football competition in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union. The exhibition League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia examines the game, both behind the scenes and on the field, from its extraordinary origins to today. As well as covering the emotional rollercoaster of triumph and despair that is at the heart of all great sporting contests, the exhibition showcases objects and photos that reveal a changing Australia and illustrates how sport itself has changed over the past hundred years. Objects on display include the Royal Agricultural Society Shield recalling the great Dally Messenger, trophies including the Courtney Goodwill Trophy and the State of Origin Shield and radio commentator Frank Hyde's binoculars and folding card table from which he called rugby league games for three decades. Queensland objects include an original program for the 1908 season of Queensland Rugby League, Artie Beetson's 1980 State of Origin jersey, Queensland's Winfield Cup 1982-95 and the Bronco grand final jersey worn by Darren Lockyer in 2000. League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia is a travelling exhibition developed by the National Museum of Australia with the Centenary of Rugby League Committee. It will also travel north, appearing at Queensland Museum's Townsville campus, Museum of Tropical Queensland, from 18 December 2008 - 8 March 2009. Explore the exhibition
