Planning your school or group visit

What you need to know to plan your school or group visit to the Museum.

Booking your visit

Bookings are essential for all schools and groups.

If your visit includes the Sciencentre please also read planning your school or group visit to the Sciencentre.

Cost

A general visit to the Museum is free. You can divide your students into small, supervised groups and explore any of our free exhibitions at your leisure.

All School Programs led by Museum staff are charged programs for which you can be invoiced. If paying by cheque please make payable to Queensland Museum Public Programs. All school program charges include GST.

The Sciencentre and some travelling exhibitions are charged exhibitions for which you can be invoiced. If paying by cheque please make payable to Queensland Museum South Bank. Exhibitions charges DO NOT incur GST.

A visit to Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb exhibition (19 April - 19 August 2012) is a charged experience. Visit Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb for full information on booking a visit and for payment details.

Group size

Maximum group size depends on the exhibitions and centres or Student Programs you are booking for.

Length of visit

Visit length depends on the exhibitions and centres you wish to visit, along with any booked School Programs.

We recommend allocating between 1½ and 2½ hours to view our exhibitions. Allow time for a break before or after your visit.

We are open 9.30am - 5pm daily (1.30pm - 5.30pm on Anzac Day) and closed Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Getting here

Queensland Museum South Bank is located on the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets, within the South Bank Cultural Precinct.

By bus

Set down in Grey Street outside ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, Stanley Street Tunnel or Stanley Place.

Bus parking is located along Montague Road.

By train

Get off at South Brisbane station and cross the road at the Grey and Melbourne Streets intersection.

By car

There is a public car park car park directly below the Museum. Enter via the Stanley Street tunnel or Grey Street.

The car park is pay on entry.

Arriving

Please arrive 15 minutes before any booked charged program or exhibition, including the Sciencentre, to take care of registration, cloaking, payment and toilet needs.

Make contact with the Visitor Services Officer at the Museum Grey St entrance (ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, level 0). They will confirm the details of your visit, discuss your itinerary and handle any invoicing / payment details.

If your visit starts in the Museum (School Program or exhibition)

If your itinerary begins with an exhibition (temporary or permanent) or a booked School Program in the Museum please enter through Level 0 (ENERGEX Playasaurus Place) on Grey Street. The Grey Street entrance opens at 9:15am during Queensland school term time. Museum staff will direct your group to the relevant Museum floor.

If your visit starts in the Sciencentre

If your itinerary begins with the Sciencentre please enter through Level 0 (ENERGEX Playasaurus Place) on Grey Street. The Grey Street entrance opens at 9:15am during Queensland school term time. Museum staff will direct your group to the Sciencentre ticketing and entrance.

If you are visiting the Sciencentre first, then continuing into the Museum, please check in with Visitor Services staff as you enter the Museum for a welcome and further information.

Cloak room

Please do not bring school bags unless absolutely necessary.

Lunches, small eskies and bags can be stored in the bag store trolleys located on level 0 of the Museum. 

Our staff will help with your storage and retrieval. No responsibility will be taken for loss of valuables.

Supervision of students

Group supervisors are responsible for the supervision of students and children while in the Museum and Sciencentre and should remain with their students at all time.

Please allow only small, supervised groups of students into the Museum shop.

Moving around the Museum

Groups are asked to use the stairs or escalators when moving between floors. Groups should not use the lifts unless necessary.

Please remember there are other visitors in the Museum, such as other schools, families and tourists and we ask that students please keep noise levels down and consider the impact of their behaviour on other Museum visitors.

Lunch & refreshments

You are welcome to bring morning tea or lunch and eat in ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, Level 0 (under cover), near the front of the Sciencentre (grassed area near the water feature) or along the river bank. 

You cannot eat or drink inside the Museum unless you have specific medical needs.

Toilets

On your arrival, toilets are available at the entrance on Level 0. During your visit, toilets are located on Levels 2 and 4 and in the Sciencentre (Level 1) and the Café.

Visitors with individual needs

We aim to provide equitable access to all visitors.

There is easy lift access to the Museum and Sciencentre from the car park and for bus and taxi passengers from Grey Street.  

All entrances and areas are wheelchair accessible.

Disabled toilet facilities are located on Level 0 and 2 and in the Sciencentre (Level 1).
