Pyramid Periwinkle
Nodilittorina pyramidalis
This small periwinkle is one of several species that commonly live on our rocky shores. It grows to about 20 mm in length, and is very common in the high intertidal zone, found most frequently on vertical rock faces. The Pyramid Periwinkle forms clusters in crevices on the rocky shore, to shelter from the sun thereby preventing drying out during extended periods of exposure.
In Australia this species ranges from southern Queensland around southern Australia to Fremantle, WA, but also occurs throughout the Indo-West Pacific.
