Oryctolagus cuniculus

Identification:

Body length 40 cm; tail length 5 cm; weight 1.5 kg. Usually brown with a reddish neck and white belly.

Habitat and Range:

Open paddocks with adjacent cover. Isolated records from North Pine Dam, Willawong, Carole Park and Coomera. Rare in Greater Brisbane. Australia-wide, but mostly south of tropics. Native to Europe and Nth Africa, also found in Americas and NZ.

Notes:

Nocturnal; social. At Coomera, warrens have been recorded in topsoil hills mounded for domestic landscaping. No other information available.

Traces:

Droppings smooth and pea-like; deposited in latrines around burrow entrances.
