Yabby

Callianassa australiensis

Features

Soft body, translucent cream-pink; large males have enormous, white flattened claw. To 40-50 mm.

Notes

Sometimes also called Ghost Nipper.

They burrow in large numbers on sheltered intertidal and shallow, subtidal muddy sandflats.

Collected by yabby pump, and commonly used for bait for fishing. Indigenous, eastern Australia.
