The Governor’s Clothes: The civil and ceremonial dress of Sir Samuel Walker Griffith
View our latest acquisition and discover the story behind how Australia’s first Chief Justice and Queensland’s ninth Premier Sir Samuel Griffith’s ceremonial robes became part of Queensland Museum’s collection.
Sir Samuel Griffith (1845-1920) held numerous positions in Queensland, including Attorney- General, Secretary for Public Instruction, Premier, Chief Justice of Queensland and Lieutenant-Governor of Queensland.
The journey of the Governor’s clothes
In May 1963 four ceremonial outfits, two academic robes and related accessories worn by Sir Samuel Griffith during his career were donated by his grandson, Mr Thomas Brown, to the Queensland Women’s Historical Association.
In 2000, the Association received a grant to undertake partial conservation of the garments and displayed them at historic house ‘Miegunyah,’ at Bowen Hills to launch the Centenary of Federation celebrations in Queensland.
Joining the Queensland Museum collection
In 2010 Sir Samuel Griffith’s descendents and the executive committee of the QWHA agreed that the Griffith Collection should be given to the State of Queensland and be housed at the Queensland Museum.
The collection showcases the grandeur of a time past and highlight the responsibility of the High Office held by Sir Samuel Griffith.

To celebrate Queensland Day on Monday 6 June join Dr Michael Marendy, Senior Curator, Costume and Textiles and Nicholas Hadnutt, Collection Manager, Cultures and Histories, as they detail Sir Samuel Griffith's career and provide behind the scenes insight into the recent acquisition of a number of garments and personal effects worn by Sir Samuel Griffith.
