Kids meet up for “Island Style” fun at Queensland Museum South Bank

12 September 2011

Dance performances, craft workshops, choral singing and more will be offered at Queensland Museum South Bank these school holidays for Kids Meet Up! Island Style.

Queensland Museum South Bank Director Dr Graeme Potter said the Museum will be transformed, providing an energetic and welcoming space for young people and their families to learn about Queensland’s Torres Strait Islander culture.

“Visitors to the Museum will explore the Islands, meet the people, discover the animals, experience dynamic performances, learn traditional skills and discover what it really means to live Island Style,” Dr Potter said.

“Kids Meet Up is an engaging and interactive way to discover different ways of life and have a great time along the way.

“Aunty Sarah Wapau and Aunty Edna Billy will introduce children to the craft of weaving through their popular workshops, where children and adults will learn to create the animals of the islands out of coconut palm leaves as they listen to stories.

“Visitors will also have the chance to see awe-inspiring performances from dance groups, including some in contemporary as well as traditional styles,” Dr Potter said.

Also on show during the holidays is the major exhibition Awakening: Stories from the Torres Strait which showcases objects of extraordinary beauty and significance from the Museum’s extensive Torres Strait collection of ceremonial masks, dance machines, headdresses, artefacts and objects from daily life on the islands.

Kids Meet Up! Island Style runs from 10am to 3pm daily, 19 September – 2 October. Entry is by gold coin donation to some activities. For program information visit www.southbank.qm.qld.gov.au.
